As you read this, let the truth reverberate around your inner being; doesn’t this sound like a life well lived, a life of joy?

I don’t know whether you’ve discovered Deuteronomy, try it, it is full to overflowing with the sort of instruction which at heart is to know him, love him, and walk in his ways.
Read it from the point of view of being enabled by his grace to live in step with him, and that our inadequacy and failure is dealt with on the cross as much as our rebellion is. Our heartfelt choice to obey him FROM love is what he is looking for, this can only come from His beautiful Spirit in us, we don’t have any desire to do this under our own steam.

‘For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, when you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this book of the Law, when you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.’

Deut 30:9b-10

‘For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.’

Deut 30:11

But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.’

Deut 30:14

Just in case you have suspicions that this is only an Old Testament emphasis, John, the disciple who called himself, ‘The disciple Jesus loved‘ says this:
‘Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?’

1 John 5:1-5

This isn’t a hidden, secret thing, it has been revealed to us in scripture for us to obey. He has put his law in our hearts, it isn’t a mystery to us any more, and we want to be like him.
Loving trusting obedience is what is asked of us. It is important to him that we walk with him in joy and gladness of heart, eagerly looking to walk softly with him, keeping in step with the Holy Spirit.

Listen to Jesus for a moment:
‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.’

John 15:9-11
