What is possible when we know we are loved?
There’s no more fear to take care of, to feed with this or that anxious thought or paranoid detail, simply a free joy to do as is appropriate in the moment. Free to be, free to love.
Do we know this fully or permanently in the here and now? Not entirely.
But for sure, we can come into a measure of it and then press in, growing more firm in our grasp of it.
Or is it that we allow ourselves to believe he has a firm grasp of us?
We are held tight by him.
The challenge will always be there, or rather the temptation..
To falter in our trust of him who loves us so well.
To falter when we fail to come up to a standard we have seen fit to set.
To believe the lie which tells us he only loves good little boys and girls.
Thankfully, he loves the grubby, stroppy ones, too. Even when they’re all grown up.
What becomes possible when this realisation settles into the soul?
…’He loves me…he has made me all he wants me to be.’?
Just as a mother takes her grubby child and soaks her in the bath, restoring her to sweet clean skin and curls… Just so are we to him, clean, sweet, and loveable..but even as grubby, tired, grumpy, spiteful, sinners, we are loved.
We need his intervening care to change the state we are in, but we are most definitely loved.
‘This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son.
And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed;
by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.
God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was.
He came to help, to put the world right again.
Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it.
Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.
This is the crisis we’re in:
God-light streamed into the world, but men and women everywhere ran for the darkness. They went for the darkness because they were not really interested in pleasing God. Everyone who makes a practice of doing evil, addicted to denial and illusion, hates God-light and won’t come near it, fearing a painful exposure.
But anyone working and living in truth and reality welcomes God-light so the work can be seen for the God-work it is.’
‘Now let me remind you dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then and still do now, for your faith is built on this wonderful message. And it this Good News that saves you if you firmly believe it…unless of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me…
That Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.’
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
New Living Translation
This becomes possible…we can walk in freedom, free from the law of sin and death, because he has set us free.
He is the ever loving Father.
He isn’t changing his mind…no..not even about you or me.
What difference does it make to you to know you are this loved?
